Why I Can't Remember If I Already Fed the Baby

The real psychology behind newborn feeding memory lapses — and what actually helps

It happens standing at the crib, bottle or breast pad still in hand, in the specific, textured way that makes it worse than ordinary forgetting: you're not blank. You remember feeding the baby. You can describe the room, the position, the small sounds. The problem is you can describe the previous feed in exactly the same detail, and there is no way, from the inside, to tell which memory belongs to twenty minutes ago and which belongs to three hours ago.

This isn't a personal failing, and it isn't something with a catchy medical name you've probably heard before, like "mommy brain." It's a specific, studied phenomenon, and it has been sitting in the psychology literature for more than twenty-five years, almost entirely disconnected from the people it seems to describe most precisely: sleep-deprived new parents.

A name for it, from 1998

In 1998, psychologists Gilles Einstein, Mark McDaniel, Rebekah Smith, and Pat Shaw published a study in the journal Psychological Science that gave this specific glitch a name: habitual prospective memory.

They were studying older adults and medication-taking, not new parents — worth saying plainly, since it's a different population doing a different task. But the structure of the problem is identical: a task repeated many times, identically, throughout the day. When you do something habitual and repetitive, your brain doesn't reliably tag each instance with a timestamp. It builds one strong, generalized memory of "doing the thing" — and every individual occurrence gets folded into it. Two kinds of errors follow from this. An omission error is skipping the task, believing you already did it. A repetition error — the one that shows up at the crib — is doing it again, unsure whether you already had.

What this looks like in a postpartum brain, specifically

In 2018, a study published in Scientific Reports tested this closer to the population that experiences it. Researchers scanned the brains of postpartum women and found reduced functional connectivity in the hippocampus and surrounding memory-retrieval network — a pattern that tracked with how many times a woman had woken during the night, independent of how tired she reported feeling.

That's a real, physical signature, not just a subjective sense of fogginess. It's also one study — not a settled consensus. Other research complicates the picture: some work has found that postpartum women report more memory trouble than they actually demonstrate on objective testing, suggesting heightened self-monitoring plays a role alongside any real decline. Both things can be true. The forgetting is real, and some of the fear of forgetting outpaces what's actually happening.

What it actually feels like — one parent's account

Research explains the mechanism. It doesn't always capture what the moment itself feels like from the inside. Aeyza Khan, a Nestly reader and mother, agreed to describe her own version of it for this piece.

The clearest instance she remembers involved a bottle, not a breast — she'd been in the kitchen, she knew that much, and she'd warmed the milk. What she couldn't reconstruct was whether she'd already fed her son or simply started and lost the thread, distracted by her phone halfway through. "I stood there for a solid minute looking between the bottle and the sink," she said, "like one of them was going to answer for me."

What stayed with her wasn't concern for her son — she was confident he'd have let her know either way. It was narrower, and in her words, harder to shake: "It wasn't him I was worried about. It was more that I couldn't trust myself with something that basic."

That distinction — not doubting the baby, doubting her own memory of caring for him — is close to what the 1998 habitual-memory research describes, though she arrived at it from lived experience, not a journal. A tracking app initially eased that particular worry. Over time, though, she noticed the relationship with it shift: "There was a stretch where I was checking the feeding log like five times in ten minutes for the same entry I already knew the answer to. I knew it. I just needed to see it again for some reason."

The moment that clarified it for her, she said, came from an ordinary exchange with her husband, who asked — not unkindly — whether she'd just checked. Her own answer surprised her before she'd finished saying it. "That was the first time it clicked that I wasn't checking because I thought something had gone wrong," she said. "I was checking so I wouldn't have to feel responsible if something did. Not the same thing. I'd been mixing those up for a while without realizing it."

Why a log helps — and what it quietly costs

A 2016 review by Evan Risko and Sam Gilbert in Trends in Cognitive Sciences found that offloading a task to an external tool improves immediate performance, but can measurably weaken a person's internal memory for the very thing they offloaded — later work has called this the "Google effect."

In April 2025, at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, a team led by Julianne Louie interviewed twenty American parents who used baby-tracking apps. Seventeen of the twenty said they relied on the log, at least in part, as a memory aid — not because they distrusted themselves generally, but because they'd learned, the hard way, exactly how this specific kind of task defeats memory.

If a log is going to help rather than quietly erode your confidence, the tool itself matters less than how you use it — something quick enough to reach for at 3 a.m. without becoming its own source of friction. Nestly's own free baby feeding tracker was built with exactly that in mind: log a feeding time, amount, or breastfeeding side in one tap, then close the app and go back to your night, rather than turning the log itself into one more thing to manage.

Not a replacement — a place to put the question

Writer Joanna Scutts first wrote about this territory in 2022, for the online magazine New_ Public, describing the last time she used the BabyConnect tracking app with her son: she paused its feeding timer rather than stopping it, and didn't reopen the app for 7,148 hours — until it quietly told her how much time had passed since the version of parenting it was built to track had ended.

In that same essay, Scutts is candid about what the app actually gave her, and what it didn't. She describes the tracking data less as insight than as an illusion of control — a small, steady subscription standing in for a certainty she didn't yet feel in those early, disorienting months, when her son sometimes felt as unknowable in her arms as he had before he was born. The app never interpreted anything for her: it offered no judgment on whether a short nap or a skipped feed meant something was wrong, only a record that something had happened. What she says it gave her, in a stretch of pandemic isolation with few of the usual supports new parents lean on, was somewhere to put her uncertainty while she waited — not proof, just a hedge against the powerlessness of waiting itself. And by her own account, that reliance had a natural end point: after a little over a year of trusting the data, she and her husband gradually needed it less, until, as she put it, "we've started to trust ourselves."

Something like that same pattern — checking driven as much by reassurance as by missing information — shows up in the CHI research too, though in more clinical language. The study's authors note that some parents tracked for peace of mind and a sense of control as much as for the data itself; one mother in their interviews described monitoring her baby's vitals overnight less to catch a problem than simply to feel that something was watching so she could sleep. The researchers are careful not to reduce baby tracking to any single motivation — augmenting memory, coordinating with a co-caregiver, and confirming alignment with medical guidance all showed up together rather than as competing explanations. What ties those reasons together, more than any one of them, is the repetitive, broken-up rhythm of a newborn's schedule, which gives a log something to anchor onto that an exhausted memory can't always supply on its own.

Between those two accounts — one lived, one studied — the picture that emerges isn't a tool replacing a mind. It's closer to what Scutts describes in her own essay: a record that didn't tell her what to feel, but gave her something steady to check against while she built, over months, the confidence to trust her own read on her son.

What this means if you're standing at the crib tonight

Not that you should distrust every tracking app, and not that you should throw yours away either. It means the uncertainty you're feeling has a documented mechanism, studied in a real journal, that has nothing to do with how attentive or capable a parent you are. It means an external log — a card taped to a headboard, an app, a whiteboard — is doing the same job a hospital checklist does: not making you smarter at 3 a.m., just making sure the thing that matters doesn't depend on you being smarter at 3 a.m. than anyone reasonably can be.

If the forgetting is showing up alongside things like persistent low mood, intrusive worry, or feeling disconnected from the day-to-day of caring for your baby, that's worth mentioning to your doctor — not because forgetting a feed means something is wrong, but because those symptoms together deserve more than a research article can offer.

Why can't I remember if I already fed my baby?
Because feeding a newborn every two to three hours is a "habitual" task — the same action repeated identically many times — and this specific structure is known to cause memory confusion even in alert adults, let alone sleep-deprived ones. Psychologists call the two failure types omission and repetition errors.
Is "mommy brain" real, or is it just sleep deprivation?
The evidence is genuinely mixed. One brain-imaging study found measurable changes tied to nighttime waking specifically. Other research found postpartum women report more forgetfulness than they actually demonstrate on objective tests — suggesting some of it may be heightened self-monitoring rather than true decline.
How often should a newborn eat overnight?
Most newborns feed every two to three hours around the clock in the early weeks, which is precisely the repetitive structure that makes tracking which feed was "last" so difficult to hold in memory.
Should I keep a baby feeding log?
Research on cognitive offloading suggests it will genuinely reduce the moment-to-moment burden of remembering — but may also reduce how much you rely on your own internal sense of your baby's patterns over time. Both effects are documented; neither cancels the other out.
What is cluster feeding, and is it different from forgetting a feed?
Cluster feeding — frequent, closely spaced feeds, often in the evening — is a normal newborn pattern, not a memory problem. It can look like confusion from the outside because the feeds come so close together, but it's a feeding-behavior pattern, not a cognitive one.
Are baby feeding tracker apps worth it?
Many parents find them useful during the hardest stretch of repetitive, sleep-fragmented routine, according to interview-based research — though researchers caution it isn't yet clear whether the log is replacing memory, easing coordination between caregivers, or doing something harder to isolate.
